Some comments we received:
Comment #1: Things that I think are essential on a basic urban jungle level that may not be suited to everyone: Some sort of lighter, pocket knife (liner lock, ideally open and close with one hand), possibly mace, watch of some sort.
Comment #2: Pocket knife, trusty ole bic, and yes a can of wasp spray deters attackers from a distance and is quite effective, much better than pepper spray, and dont forget a length of rope travel light be aware of all surroundings trust not what you see.
Comment #3: A good machette, hatchet, or even multi-tool that all can be written off as camping gear, but is excellent protection. Double-check with the school policies too, some schools now allow students that go through the proper classes and courses to own a weapon on campus if it remains in a secure location when you’re between classes.
Comment #4: If you live off campus, a shotgun is always a plus if you’re 18+ you can most likely own one. You could even keep it in a “secure” container in the trunk of your car, (its not on your person so you’re not “carrying” it) a good BoB is always a plus, some spam, or MRE’s wouldn’t be bad in addition to the powerbars. Always carry at the least 50ft of paracord, a good knife, 2 methods of fire starting, canteen and water purification, multi-tool, camp shovel, and maybe even a gas mask.
Comment #5: To everyone recommending wasp spray, please stop! This stuff has never been proven to work in defending against attacks. In fact a quick search of the internet finds that it has been proven to be false more than true. There have even been reports that people who accidentally sprayed themselves had little to no adverse reactions. The only real truth is that it certainly sprays further than pepper spray. Not something I’m willing to gamble my safety on. You have to understand, there is always the possibility that someone will have to use this information. If it doesn’t work they will probably have just angered their attacker and possibly put themselves in more danger. I don’t want that on my conscience.
