Comment#1: We have several to support our many and varied needs, but my top 3 are our 12k,7.5 and 3.5 military gensets in multifuel < diesel as a primary but will burn almost anything but gasoline > and working on adding propane/LNG rigs to them for further versatility. And Define portable ? portability is subjective and relavent to power output.
I also like solar. I am just afraid when the electronics break down in it, you have to find a replacement. I think the best generator for self reliance is perhaps a home built type that uses car alternators to generate electricity. The r
eason I favor alternators is because you can take any engine from a lawn mower engine, steam engine, natural gas engine, to a semi tractor trailer engine to run that thing and you get multiple fuel capability whether it is gasoline, kerosene, diesel, gas, propane, firewood/steam, wind, and water.
I agree with the Honda portables. I used to work on a bunch of movie sets and we had those all over the place as back ups.
