What is your ideal bug out/survival animal?

David Albus asked below: “What is your ideal bug out/survival animal? If you could only take one animal with you in a bug out situation what would it be and why? How does your terrain and climate effect your choice?”

Some comments we received:

Comment#1: A medium sized dog. Not too much to feed. I want HIS smell and hearing. I’ll handle the defense.

Comment#2: Guard/hunting dog. They would help with food, security and keeping warm. Do not require too much maintenance and survival needs. I was going to say a horse for transportation but they require more food and water and supplies, also only have a short list of contributions to the situation. Also a dog can be much quieter and if something happens to me, the dog has a good chance of survival.

Comment#3: I’m not sure of any animal that would serve much purpose other than a dog. Not just any dog but some sort of hunting dog. My choice is the American Pit Bull terrier for various reasons. High prey drive, willingness to please, determination, strength, hardiness and intelligence. Able to bring down prey much larger than itself. Without the abilty to protect and hunt food any animal would be worthless in a survival situation.

Comment#4: Horse… Reason: hyper hearing, sent, companionship and a source of quick transportation. Horses are also protective and capable of defending and even caring for themselves. Also being that horses are vegetarian their food source would be readily found. A meat eater would be hearer to sustain in my personal opinion.

Comment#5: One more vote here for my dog. He keeps me warm, is loyal to me, has great instincts, will eat anything I give him, warns me of approaching bears and mountain lions and as a last resort, I can kill him and eat him. (Said mostly in jest, of course.)
