Magnesium fire starter

We posted on our Facebook page:

Have you ever used one of these and know what it is? What were your results?

Some comments we received:

Comment #1:  Magnesium Stick, and they do work very well… especially if your tinder is damp. I’m good at rubbing sticks together, but even I can’t rub sticks when everything is damp. It flares up at around 5,600 F, so it will go a long way in an emergency

Comment #2:  Works pretty well especially with a good knife to scrape off the magnesium. It might dull the knife a little so having a sharpener is a good idea following fire building.

Comment #3:  I’ve used one. You don’t need a sharp knife. You can shave off some of the magnesium with the back of your knife. It’s a lot of work if you dig too deep into it. Press lightly and you can build a good pile of shavings pretty quick.

Comment #4:  It is a flint stone. it was used to create spark with a knife or metal object to ignite fire from dried material. it also was a way to sharpen the knife. and back in the old west, when you ran out of bullets, you could throw it at the enemy…. OK I made that last sh!t up!
