Bathroom facilities in a post disaster situation

We posted on our Facebook page:

Have you thought about bathroom facilities and such in a post disaster situation? Ideas?

Some comments we received:

Comment #1: Minimum 200 feet from any water source! Down stream is still contaminating the stream ! There may well be a friendly group further down. Dig a cat hole minimum 12 inches deep. Mark it when recovered with a couple of crossed sticks like you cross ski poles. this will save it being re dug. for longer stays dig a latrine.

Comment #2: If you have survived past the initial disaster and moved on to a more peaceful “homesteading” type of primitive living then septic tanks are easily built from large plastic barrels or large plastic food grade liquid shipping containers as long as the ground will perk. Use another large container or two for rain collection (I live in an area of regular rains) and set up a gravity feed system. I’ve lived off the grid for more than a year at a time before and had no issues with it. The more people of course then the more septic tanks would be needed. If you’re still constantly moving trying to avoid violent hordes and stay alive then just shallow pit latrines dug at each stopping location would be a better option.

Comment #3: Composting toilet and humanure…. we are using this method right now and have been since Feb. with no issues what so ever… and will continue to use it when the earthship is built.
