What do YOU think are the most important food items to keep in emergency storage?

Some comments we received:

Comment #1:Rice and any food loaded with carbs need energy to survive a disaster! Try filling sandbags on an empty stomach!

Comment #2: Rice and grains can be purchased in bulk quantities in the pounds. These and vitamins. Eating only unpolished rice will give you Beri Beri (Thiamin Deficiency), as well as several other vitamin deficiencies.

Comment #3: Rice, beans, Spam, ramen, dehydrated vegetables and water. Rice and beans= complete protien.

Comment #4: Build a smoke house and a cool root celler so it can be used during a possible long term power and outage or fuel crisis…it can be used to cure freshly obtained meat for long storage and keep other goods from spoiling such as storing good apples in straw for many months to eat on….

Comment #5: Learn how to can. Invest in a pressure canner, jars, and re-usable lids from Tattler. Grow your own garden from non- hybrid or GMO seeds so you can keep saving seeds from year to year. Can your own healthy garden veggies and fruits! Don’t f

Comment #6: Forget the homemade soup! Even meats like ground beef, bacon, sausage, cubed meats and chicken can be canned safely. Have a cool dark place to store the jars, in their boxes with the dividers so that they don’t break bumping into each other. We also keep goats and chickens! A small dehydrator is good for drying fruits and veggies, but to store them long term, you need an airtight container, such as lidded jars or mylar sealable bags and oxygen absorbers.

Comment #7: I think it would be important to “have a test period of 30/45/even 90 days” where your actually only using the foods you plan on storing. This will not only rotate your stock but it’ll leave room for those last min ideas; that now (after th

e test period) you can restock with those items that did and didn’t work in mind along with those items you found yourself wanting craving or needing. Noone mentioned an indoor herbs garden.. tampons.. condoms was an excellent idea. Wine instead of beer.. cheap is aOK it’ll be good for trades. Backups to backups.. oatmeal was a nice touch. And so was the rootcellar. Can’t store a lot in your kitchen and garage.. a rootcellar would be an easy beginner project for anyone owning their own land. If you don’t or are like me paying off a piece of land. Consider helping others out with their own rootcellar and supplies. Being a LMOE is lonely, save ur self and find friends in your neighborhood NOW.
